Description: The Unit Boundaries of any remaining units are unfrozen, and the models within the unit are rearranged to reform a legal formation. See the Reference Handbook ; Maintaining a Viable Formation for details.
Afterwards, nudge units that are neither Breaking nor Pursuing back in contact with each other where contact was lost. See the Reference Handbook ; Nudge units to maintain contact for details.
Nudge units to maintain contact
After unfreezing Unit Boundaries and rearranging models within the unit to maintain legal formation, any units that were Engaged in Combat just before this, but lost base contact due to updated Unit Boundaries, are nudged back into contact, following the rules below. Units that are Broken and about to flee, and units that are about to Pursue, are not nudged.
Move units one at a time, in the order described below, until all units have either attempted to maintain contact and failed, or are now in contact with the enemy again.
• Move Active Player's units first.
• Move all units on each side, in the order that allows the most units to remain in Combat.
• If equal, the owner decides the order of moving its units.
Move the unit to maintain contact with the unit(s) they were in contact with before updating Unit Boundaries, following the rules below:
• If the unit is in contact with an enemy already, it is not moved.
• The unit cannot move through other units or Impassable Terrain.
• The unit cannot move into contact with new enemy units, but they can end their move within 1" of other units and Impassable Terrain.
• Move the unit the minimum amount required to maintain contact.
• Move the unit in straight lines, either directly forwards, backwards, sideways, or a combination of two of these directions.
• Nudging cannot change the facing that is in contact with enemies.
If these movement rules do not allow the unit to maintain contact, do not move the unit at all. Units that lose contact and follow the rules for No More Foes (see below).
If, as a result of updating Unit Boundaries, two or more separate groups of opposing units have been created, each such subgroup will be treated as a separate Combat from now on.
No More Foes
When a unit is unable to be Nudged back into contact with enemies it previously was in contact with, including due to the unit no longer being on the Battlefield (e.g. due to being removed as a casualty outside the Round of Combat), such that it finds itself no longer Engaged in Combat, the unit may perform a Post-combat Pivot, or if Charging, an Overrun.
