Attachable Models that join other units form a Combined Unit. Once an Attachable Model has joined a unit, they are considered part of the unit for all rules purposes.
h2 class='ruleTitle'>Joining other unitsAttachable Models can join other units either by Deploying inside and simultaneously with the unit, or by moving into contact with the unit with a Move Manoeuvre, i.e. a Reform, Advance, or March Move. If the latter, the unit that was joined cannot move further in the same phase.
Attachable models ignore the Unit Spacing rule with regards to the unit they are about to join, and they must have enough movement to reach their final and legal position within the unit, which normally means the models must be able to reach the front rank.
During the Player Turn in which the Attachable Model joins the unit, the Attachable Model and the unit are treated individually for the purpose of determining which model has moved or Marched.
Units that are Shaken or Engaged in Combat cannot be joined.
The Attachable Model can choose any legal position it can reach with its move. That includes moving through the unit it joins and displacing other Attachable Models. Displaced models are placed in rear ranks. If the unit has a single rank, the Attachable Model or the displaced models can alternatively be placed on the side of the unit, forming a new file

h2 class='ruleTitle'>Moving Combined UnitsCombined Units are moved as a group, following the normal rules. Attachable Models can move within its unit’s formation by swapping places with other models, as long as the resulting position is still a legal position, normally in the front rank.
This can be done as part of the following moves:
• Move Manoeuvres. Measure the distance the Attachable Model has moved from starting to ending positions as normal.
• Pivots, including Post-combat Pivots and Pivots after passing a Rally Test.
• Combat Reforms. Note that additional restrictions apply to which positions are legal.
Attachable Models are not allowed to move within their unit’s formation under any other circumstances, such as when Charging, Aligning, Pursuing or performing a Flee Move.
h2 class='ruleTitle'>Placement within a Combined UnitUnless stated otherwise, attachable models are required to be placed in the front rank of the unit they are joined to. If this is not possible due to the front rank already being filled with other Attachable Models, the model must instead be placed as far forward as possible.
h2 class='ruleTitle'>Matching Bases
In Combined Units with both Attachable Models and Rank-and-File models, an Attachable Model is considered to have a Matching Base if the size of the model’s base is the same as that of the Rank-and-File models in the unit, or if the model’s base size is a multiple of the size of the Rank-and−File models’ in the unit (e.g., a 40x40 mm base in a unit of 20x20 mm bases). Models on Matching bases are placed inside the formation of the unit they join, normally displacing another model or models. If the model has a larger base than the Rank-and-File models, it counts as occupying all ranks its base covers for Proper Ranks calculations.
If a model with a Matching Base has a longer base than the Rank-and-File models, the unit can have more than one incomplete rank if all incomplete ranks consist entirely of models with such bases (e.g., the rear parts of long bases like War Platforms can form several incomplete ranks).
A model cannot join a unit with more than one rank if its base is wider than the unit, nor can a unit Reform into a formation narrower than any model joined to it.
h2 class='ruleTitle'>Mismatching Bases
Any base that is not a Matching Base is considered a Mismatching Base, such as a 40x40 mm base in a 25x50 mm unit. A model with a Mismatching Base is always placed in contact to the side of the unit, aligned with its front. Each unit can only have two Mismatching Bases, one at each side. These models are considered to be only in the first rank and are not counted when determining the number of models in each rank for Proper Ranks. They form a separate file of one model each.
\
Matching and Unmatching Bases.a) A Character on a Mismatching Base is placed next to the unit. Characters on Matching Bases are placed inside the unit, as far forwards as possible. This unit is considered to have 6 Files and 4 Ranks.\
b) When an Attachable Model joins the unit, the small Attachable Model in the second rank must be moved to the side in order to have all Attachable Models as far forwards as possible.
h2 class='ruleTitle'>Units of only Attachable Models
For Combined Units consisting entirely of Attachable Models, Matching or Mismatching Bases are determined differently since there are no Rank-and-File models. In these cases, the owner of the unit decides when the unit is first formed, which model's base is used in place of Rank-and-File models. Models with the same base, or bases that are a multiple of it, are considered Matching.
If the chosen model leaves the unit or is removed as a casualty, a new model must be chosen. If possible, this choice must be made so that as few models as possible change their status regarding Matching or Mismatching, normally this means choosing a model with the same base as the model that left the unit.
h2 class='ruleTitle'>Rank-and-File Models in a Combined Unit Wiped Out
When all the Rank-and-File models in a combined unit are wiped out, but there are still Attachable Models left, they form a smaller combined unit. This smaller unit is treated as the same unit for effects and Panic Tests.
h2 class='ruleTitle'>Leaving a Combined UnitAttachable models can leave a combined unit with a Move Manoeuvre, or by Charging out of it, assuming they are able to move freely. This means Attachable models can not leave units while Engaged in Combat, if they have already moved, or if they are Shaken.
h2 class='ruleTitle'>Move Manoeuvres out of a Unit
To leave a unit, select the unit and move the Attachable Model out of the unit using a Move Manoeuvre. Attachable models ignore the Unit Spacing rule with regards to the unit they are leaving. The unit that is left behind is not considered to have moved, and is free to perform its own move later in the phase.
h2 class='ruleTitle'>Charging out of a Unit
An Attachable Model in a Combined Unit may declare a Charge on its own during the Charge Phase, i.e. Charging out of the unit and leaving the unit behind. When doing this, apply the following rules:
• Use the position of the Combined Unit for determining which Facing the Charge is Declared against, and for determining the Flee direction if the charged unit performs a Flee! Charge Reaction.
• Use the Attachable Model for determining Line of Sight and distance to the enemy unit.
• Attachable models ignore the Unit Spacing rule with regards to the unit they are leaving.
• The unit itself (including other Attachable Model in the unit) cannot declare Charges in the same Player Turn.
• If the Charge is successful, move the Attachable Model out of the unit by Charging as normal.
If there is not enough room to physically move the model out of the unit, the Charge cannot be Declared.
• If the Charge is not successful, the Attachable Model makes a Failed Charge Move out of the unit.
If the Failed Charge Move is too short to place the Attachable Model outside 1" of the Combined Unit, the Attachable Model remains in the Combined Unit, and the entire Combined Unit performs the Failed Charge move instead.
• Once the Attachable Model declares a Charge, it is treated as a separate unit. This means that the model uses its own Charge Speed.
