Battle Preparations

(Rule)
Description: Before battle can be joined, you must establish the nature of the battlefield, the armies that will fight upon it, and their reason for being there. This is a natural part of setting up the game, but it can also represent a commander reviewing their troops and scouting the land in preparation for an important battle.

When preparing to play a game of The 9th Age: Fantasy Battles, players follow a series of steps:

1 - Pregame planning (typically done before players arrive to the gaming table)

  • Army Size is decided, which determines the size of the game. This can be done by the players agreeing on an Army Size, or an outside source such as campaign rules or a tournament organiser dictating this.

  • Build an Army. Each player creates an Army Lists from one of the Armybooks.

2 - Initial preparations (these are sometimes done before arrival - typical in a tournament setting, and sometimes done by both players together - typical in more casual settings)

  • Build the Battlefield by setting up terrain and scenery to create an engaging and challenging environment for the battle.

  • Share Army Lists with your opponent, revealing the units and options you will be using during the game.

  • Select Victory Conditions. Normally this means picking Primary and Secondary Objectives, which define the goals for the coming battle.

  • Select Deployment Type. This defines how the armies will be placed on the Battlefield before the game begins.

3 - Battle setup (these actions are done at the gaming table by both players together)

  • Roll-off for Attacker and Defender. The players roll-off to see who will decide, which player is going to be the Defender, the other will be the Attacker.

  • Defender Decides Deployment Zones. These are the areas where each player's army will start the game.

  • Pregame Selections. Choices to make before deployment are made at this step. Common choices include choices for Secondary Objectives and Spell Swaps.

  • Deploy units. Players place their units, starting with the Attacker, within their designated deployment zones.

  • Move Vanguarding units. Units with the model rule Vanguard perform their pre-game movement.

Season Packs are an annually updated supplement that can provide support in building a battlefield and add several variations on deployment types, Primary Objectives and Secondary Objectives. If you are looking for a fast and simple game, or this is one of your first games, we recommend you use the rules below and leave Season Packs for next time.
